DUE Wednesday, April 8th by 9:00 PM.
Compare and contrast your own view of time with two or three other people’s, such as family members, friends, colleagues at work, etc. You might do a bit of interviewing for this. What conclusions can you draw? Add your comment to the Blog below.

  1. Time, or the lack thereof, is the bane of my existence. I never seem to have enough. I dream of being able to freeze time instead of it rushing by like an out-of-control freight train. I remember as a child feeling like time would slow down and drag by, especially on nights like Christmas Eve when each second felt like and hour, and each hour an eternity. We weren't allowed to wake my parents until 7:00 am. One Christmas Eve, time even seemed to go backward. My Dad set all the clocks in the house back an hour so that he could have an extra hour's sleep! Not cool! Wait a minute...maybe that's not such a bad idea!

I hate the expression "killing time" because it is so very precious to me now. When I talk with my kids about time, they feel like it is something that controls them. They have to be certain places at certain times like school, track, dance, etc. They love those times when "time" is no longer in control and they can do what they like when they like. My husband and other people my age seem to view time as something slippery and fluid like water that they would like to grab and hang on to, but it seems to simply slip through their fingers. For me, though it is a slippery little bugger, I still work very hard at managing it so that it doesn't control me.

My view of time is that it is something that controls me. I can't do every thing I want to because I don't have time to do them. During the week I have school, sports, homework, eating, and sleeping. I don't always have time for all of them so time forces me to chose which ones I have time to do. Time also doesn't let me go or do things I would rather do. If I have a couple free hours in between two things I can't go to the beach or Tahoe which is what I want to do. This is because time limits me. I think the structure of time is a curse that limits what you can do.

However my friend thinks that time is a drug that people can't get enough of. People spend a lot of effort and money to stay healthy so they can live longer and have more time. The ironic part is these people spend a lot of time as well to live longer and have more time toward the end of their lives. Why spend time so you can have that time toward the end of your life. Time is addictive they always want more. My other friend's interpretation of time is that is a very structured thing. Time is always flowing at a constant speed everywhere. Time is the oldest thing. Nothing can be older than time because everything's age is measured in time.

My opinion of time is that it can not be accurately described because it is a primal force that goes beyond language. While one can create as many concepts definitions and theories to try to put time in a neat little box, it is ultimately futile because of the ineffable nature of time. To attempt to quantify time by saying one has too much or too little is incorrect because time is not simply a unit of measurement. Time is a substance, it can be bent and stretched by natural forces such as gravity and velocity just like so many things we consider psychical. If time is not constant then to use it as a measuring tool would be rather silly since it would not be able to be applied in all circumstances where one would measure time.

  4. Time is a concept that I don't think much of, I've asked me friends and family what they thought time was and I didn't get much from them other than something man made to get to places on time. I feel from what we learned from this unit that it goes deeper than that. In fact the subject of time is quite frustrating. The fact that time as of now can only go forward is frustrating and scary. What exactly happens when time ends? From what I got by asking this to my friends and family is that they weren't seeing the bigger picture and the more that I think of time and what exactly time is, the more I figure Im not seeing the bigger picture either. Another thing I really got from this is that time goes by faster and faster and that time is something that we always need and in someway we are enslaved by it.

  5. Time is a certain entity or ordinance that we as humans tend to follow in order to maintain a orderly and organized world. After talking with my family and friends, I found that time is much more than just a way to keep things ordered. Time is much more valuable than that. Time is a way to measure your experiences and memories that are important to you as you go through life. Time can keep you from doing the things that you want to do and could hold you back from a lifetime of experiences. Time is a way to measure maturity and how wise one may be. Time is a precious and cherished object that we can't see, or feel but we know its there. The fact of there matter is that time can be changed or altered by the ones who seek to make the most of their time. Time isn't just a measurable it's what we crave the most in our lives. We crave to live longer, we want more vacation days, we hope to go to places we ant to be at, and more importantly we find ways to not do these things because we are preoccupied with other things. My conclusion is that time is a gift that we take for granite. Time is something that must be cherished and we should be privileged to have, and most of us including myself don't at times. We must make of the most of the time we are given.

  6. Some may view time differently as me. Time can either be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. Time is the reason for ordinance in the world. Without time our lives would always be chaotic and things would be very different. We wouldn't have time for anything! Time can be good because it can force you to get things done and it can always be a motivation. Time can also be a bad thing because it can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Time is mysterious in the way it works for some people. Humans are very dependent on it and there is nothing wrong with that.
Others, like my family and friends, believe that being dependent on time is not a good thing. They believe in order to live your life as freely as possible you must not obey time and you must make up your kind of time. You must independent from it in order to live a happy life and live like there is no time in the world.

  7. To me time is like a currency I never seem to have enough of it and it runs out so quickly. Even though I try to live my life freely time clearly runs my life. Time tells me when to wake up, when to go to school or work and when to go to sleep. So time can be both a good and bad thing, for even though time runs our lives we still seem to get on just fine with using the measurment of our lives. When I asked some family about their thoughts on time they concluded that time is a good thing to them because we've been programmed since birth to be run my time and it is all we know. Also, time moves quicker and quicker as we get older.

  8. To me ,time is relative to any individual person or object. It depends on how fast the object is moving and how fast the observer is moving. If an object is moving close to the speed of light then time moves slower for it than it does a stationary object. But that does not really matter on Earth because the differences of time are so small that it doesn't impact anyone. To people, time is just something to be measured to know when a project is due or when your birthday is or when its time to eat dinner.

My family agrees with me that time is different for everyone. They say it depends on how the individual is feeling that day; when people say that it feels like a slow day, they usually are feeling tired and if a day feels like it is going by fast, they may be doing something fun, so the time just flies by.

  9. Really time is the guiding force that myself and others must base our whole existence on. Although I don't necessarily enjoy having my personal decisions controlled by this mechanical clock, I don't exactly have a choice if I want to be successful. Contemporary society is set at such a fast pace, and sometimes I question if this way of life is truly healthy or how humans are meant to live. Personally, I feel time limits me. I love learning and school, but I don't like how our current school system attempts to teach us by cramming us with facts and piling on extra work outside of our 7 hour day. On top of school work, most people my age have commitments with clubs, athletics, and their family. I wish I had more time to go hiking or bake or watch that movie I heard was good, but usually it's hard to squeeze it all in because my time is limited.
When discussing time with my family and friends they consider time to be a scary thing. You have no control over it; you can never stop it, go back, or go forward. We all must fit in what we want to while our biological clocks tick away. Time is not something that is natural, it's been manufactured. Clocks are the reasoning behind the time controlled world we live in.

  10. Time is a measurement of how we see things. It allows humans to distinguish between something we have seen and something we will see. It also allows us to measure distance. With all the things we base on time it seems silly to me because time isn't constant. Why would we measure things with a ruler that changes how big an inch is? I think that time shouldn't be measure but rather studied and admired for its existence.
I interviewed my family but the question of time sort of confused them so they didn't say much. My dad said that time is a human fabricated thing because we are obsessed with measuring things. My mom said that time is simply seconds, minutes, hours, days, etc. I agree and support both of their responses as they coincide with mine.

  11. I believe time brings order. Not in the sense that if left alone, misplaced objects return to their spot, but that time allows for a schedule, routine or a natural rhythm to be created. Without time, appointments would never be kept, nightly bedtime routines (like getting ready for bed and reading a chapter in your current novel) never followed and one's sleep cycle would be skewed. With time, injuries heal, tears stop and order is kept.
My dad says that "time and tide wait for no man," and my mom says that "opportunities never knock on the same door twice." While I'm sure those are either references to books I've never read or expressions I've never heard, I think those say a lot about my parents beliefs about time, and how my sisters and I were raised as an extension. My parents are all about bettering yourself and try to get the best future possible. They believe in seizing the moment while you can, so maybe they believe time is fleeting.
In any case, I got my finding comfort in routines from my mother, so our beliefs aren't all that different.

  12. To me, time a way to organize your day, and it creates and defines who you are. People are what they do. A person is defined as a student if they spend their time learning. Someone who works all day, is considered a business man. A woman who is with her children all day, is a stay at home mom. An athlete is spends spare time working out. By prioritizing, you define who you are. My mom believes time creates unnecessary stress and emotions. She thinks the world needs to slow down, and enjoy the moment a little more.

  13. Personally, I don't believe time is an existent thing outside the human perspective. It was a synthetic, man-made idea that was used to keep track of the day. But what time really is, is that it's the rate of change for something, whether it is position, decay, etc. Since it takes time to take several steps from where you were originally standing, you moved through space with motion as a rate of change for your position. Now time is also used to mark a rate of decay, or as we commonly call it "age". For example, take a simple blood cell. They only live for about 120 days as they decay through that movement in time, we calculate the rate at when they will finish the decaying process in the future, but we can only experience what we have in the present. To me, time is just a way to mark where we are and how long we have left.

  14. What's interesting about time is that it is something we are all familiar with but we each perceive it in a different way. Although time is a common thing everyone deals with every day, everyone seems to have different opinions about it. My mom sometimes prays that time will move slower and my boyfriend, cameron, thinks that time moves slowly when you want it to over fast, and it moves faster when you wish it would slow down. I personally think time is made up and restrictive. Time didn't exist until someone decided it should and some one created clocks and schedules which limit us. Because we wake up at a certain time go to school or work at a certain time, eat at a certain time we have little control over our daily lives. If someone were to veer from the schedule they are criticized, sometimes punished. The creation of times takes away our freedom to do things when we feel like it.

  15. Time is the most complex figment of our imagination. Our society functions off of innovation and order, so we naturally fabricated a device to provide consistent structure. We created time because we couldn't fathom the absence of exactness. Hours, minutes, seconds, all tick away, and with it so too does our sanity. Humans obsess over time, and buckle under the ever growing weight of the hands of the clock. Time is relative, it is not only unique to each individual, but to each individual moment. When we need time, it seems to slip quickly through our fingers, yet when we don't, we feel as though we have all of the time in the world at our disposal. My friends believe that time is working against them. If life is a game, then time is the opposing team. It tricks us, escapes us, and leaves us exhausted from the constant tug-of-war. Humans can penetrate the expanses of space, formulate weapons of mass destruction, and clone the genetic makeup of a living organism, yet when faced with time we remain helplessly and hopelessly captive.

  16. Time is constant. Unchanging, uncontrolled, free. It ticks by in a perfect consistent interval measured by humans to help us understand it. When I put on my watch the seconds tick audibly. At a consistent rate. Even though during the day it feels like time moves slower (*cough* in Chemistry *cough*) or faster; it moves consistently and precisely; and it will do so until the end of time.

  17. To me time is priceless, because it can be taken away from you in a matter of seconds. Time is also a way to be control but it also defines who are in a sense. When you are younger time controlled you, school schedules bedtimes, your mom decide when you come home from a friends. Time controlled you life, which it continues to do until the day you run out of it. Time also defines you because you control your actions, you have the ability to chose how to use your time.
My mom agrees that time is limited and people should spend it to better themselves.

Typing this out again because it deleted my original response from last time for no reason (ugh...)

I view time as always relative to other things. Time is either too short or too long depending on the circumstances. They say that "time flies when you're having fun." I think time feels faster when you are occupied with things that take your mind away from the time you have.

My mother says that she believes time is too short. People do not have enough time to do everything they have always wanted to do, and she wishes we could.

  20. I tend to view time as nothing more that a measurement that doesn't truly exist outside human perception. Though this mere measurement has many uses in today's society with allowing people to meet easily and keeping the work week consistent and days structured.

My step mother says as you get older you tend to have less tim and attempt to get more time to do the things you want, when you're young you don't mind wasting time because it seems infinite but when faced with mortality you tend to want more back.
